Two-stroke vs Four-stroke Outboard Engines
Before you buy a boat engine, it is important to know the differences between the two technologies. The most common internal combustion engines on the market are characterized by the repetition of an engine cycle consisting of four phases: intake, compression, combustion and expansion, and exhaust.
In recent years, four-stroke engines have gained ground. The trend in the industry is to promote the construction of four-stroke outboard engines because they are more environmentally friendly, but also two-stroke direct injection engines (the dosage of the combustion mixture is calculated precisely to achieve increased combustion).
Two-stroke engines
For the same cylinder capacity, a two-stroke engine develops more power than a four-stroke engine.
What are the advantages? They have a simple design, are lighter and accelerate faster, are available at a lower price, are easy to maintain, and parts are easier to find.
What are the disadvantages? They are more polluting and noisier; they can be harder to start; they require a mixture of gasoline and oil; and the carburetor and spark plugs need frequent cleaning.
Four-stroke engines
They have several advantages: quiet operation, low fuel consumption, less pollution, greater reliability, do not require a mixture of gasoline, and can be used in any type of water.
What are the weaknesses? Higher prices: they are heavier, harder to transport and store, and they have multiple components.
We advise you to choose an engine that is suitable for your boat. Most good dealers will assist you in this selection, but knowing these facts is critical to getting exactly what you want.
