The Advantages and Disadvantages of Flat-bottom Boats
These are rigid boats made of aluminum, fiberglass, or wood, and the main design feature is that they have a flat hull, which is ideal for fishing and hunting because of the increased stability.
The boat's design allows it to navigate through very shallow waters, which is ideal on rivers and in areas with many submerged obstacles. The standard length of this type of boat varies from 2.4 m (2.6 yd) to 7.3 m (8 yd) and the width from 81 cm (0.9 yd) to 150 cm (1.65 yd). The boats are usually built with a "transom" that allows the mounting of an outboard engine, which can be controlled both by the handle and from a distance, while the space and shape of the boat allow the mounting of a console.
Advantages of flat-bottom boats:
- relatively low purchase price
- easy to maintain
- easy to accessorize (rod holders, etc.)
- increased stability on calm waters
- ideal for fishing on calm waters
- large storage space
Disadvantages of flat-bottom boats:
- they do not allow movement at very high speeds
- unstable on choppy waters
- difficult to handle in bad weather
